Improving Your Presentation Skills
“The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public.” (Sir George Jessel)
Have you had this feeling before? Rest assured you are not alone. You might be one of the many who would rate your fear of public speaking alongside or ahead of death! Your fear may translate itself to “FEAR” - Forget Everything And Run!!
Why do you want to improve your skills in this area? It might be to reduce the feelings of the nerves - or even panic. Maybe to reduce the risk of making yourself look a fool in front of the audience? Or you may want to be able to present yourself and your message with more confidence and conviction to win people over. Whatever your reasons, the principles we will cover here will help you.
You’ve been asked to give an important presentation. A lot is riding on how well you can deliver. The problem is, you’re not sure where to begin. The last class you took on presentation skills told you to tie your hands behind your back and blend in with everyone else. Is that really a good approach?
If you want to WOW your audience, you have to STAND UP and STAND OUT! Here are 5 Presentation principles designed to help you see an immediate and dramatic improvement in your presentation performance.

Information About Audience Connecting Public Speaking
Presentation Principle 3: Give the Audience All the Enthusiasm!
You can’t expect an audience to be enthusiastic about a product or program you aren’t excited about. Presentation author Doug Staneart concluded, “Your audience will have just about as much excitement about your presentation as you do, and no more.” Enthusiasm is very catchy. Most audiences will match your level of enthusiasm pound for pound.
According to the Lamalle Report on Top Executives of the 1990s, one of the most important factors in determining financial success by those earning over $250,000 is being enthusiastic and having a positive attitude (46%). Apparently, along with being incredibly enthusiastic, successful people never underestimate the power of positive thinking.
Why does having a positive attitude matter so much? Research solidly indicates that expectations influence behavior meaning if you expect to succeed, it is likely that you will and if you expect to fail, you are more likely to be unsuccessful. Expectations create outcomes because we work toward the outcome we expect, even if it is failure. Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or think you can't--you are right.”
Enthusiasm has amazing transformational powers. As you release your energy using positive nonverbal behaviors (gestures, movement, loud voice, etc.), you will begin to relax. And, your audience will quickly become excited. It works like magic! Watch how easily you can transfer your enthusiasm to your audience.

Public speaking is a common source of stress for everyone.
Many of us would like to avoid this problem entirely, but this is hard to do. Whether we work alone or with large numbers of people, eventually we will need to speak in public to get certain tasks accomplished. And if we want to be leaders or achieve anything meaningful in our lives, we will often need to speak to groups, large and small, to be successful.

Public Speaking: Funny Question and Answer Sessions Question-and-answer sessions are great opportunities to show off your sense of humor and get audience participation during a public speaking engagement. Let's see how we can have some fun with them. Public Speaking: Heirloom Handouts If you want your public speaking handout material to be kept forever, you must give each audience member a reason to keep it. I do this by strategically adding important reference material to EACH PAGE of the speaking handout. This material was picked specifically for that day's audience. Speakers club offers something for everyone Public speaking is being offered in Moray - for anyone from skilled orators to audience-shy mumblers. Elgin Speakers Club will start its new season tomorrow, and the fortnightly sessions cater for all levels of ability. ... Public Speaking: Get 'em On Stage Good public speaking should use attention gaining devices. Here is one that works every time: Virtually every speaking presentation I do, I find some excuse to get someone on stage with me. When an audience member is on stage, the rest of the audience is glued to the action for the following reasons: Public Speaking: I Get So Emotional If you want to get real action out of your audience during a public speaking engagement, then tugging on their heart strings can help make it happen. This is where your storytelling ability can really make you shine. Public Speaking: Dueling Flip Charts Here is a very interesting way to use flip charts when public speaking. Put one on both sides of the stage and pop back and forth between them. You can have an audience member volunteer at each flip chart helping you record input from other audience members. Public Speaking for ?Scaredy Cats? Business communications researchers have studied the phenomenon of stage fright experienced by would-be public speakers. Let me summarize most of the findings in very down-to-earth terms: Most people would rather die than stand up before an audience and deliver a speech. To suggest that these individuals are as ?nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs? may be something of an understatement in describing these public speaking ?scaredy cats.
